Balti is a town situated 135 km north of Chisinau, on the bank of Raut river. Because of its importance as an industrial and commercial center, it is often called the North Capital of Moldova. The population of Balti is over 127,000 (2004). It is the third largest city in terms of population, after Chisinau and Tiraspol (Transnistria).

Balti is one of the main economic centers of Moldova. It hosts a free economic zone, with  numerous companies in such industries as textiles, food and construction.

The places to visit in Balti are:

1. The National Theater “Vasile Alecsandri”
2. History and Ethnography Museum (located on: str. Alexandru Lapusneanu, 2)
3. The church Sfantul Constantin si Elena
4. The Central Park and State University “Alecu Russo”, built in 1940 in a former girl's lyceum building.
